I tried a reinstalation of alsa per the instructions here: http://doc.gwos.org/index.php/Comprehensive_Sound_Problems_Solutions_Guide

I'm still experiencing the same problem.

Something else I've noticed is that if I make a change in the sound system area and restart the sound system it will just loop over restarting. For example, if I change the MIDID device. I can enable/disable the sound system and it will restart ok -- though even disabled, I can play music through Amarok...

The system in question has a built-in sound card and a PCI card. The problem was that the PCI card (my preferred) was not set to the default sound card in ALSA. I searched the web for the issue and found this:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/ubuntu-63/how-do-you-change-the-default-sound-card-in-kubuntu-499520/

From what I could tell (I'm not a guru...) the PCI card was the default. I don't know what these steps kick in the head, but it worked.
