Latest updates for Edgy broke my sound (HDA Intel)

The Volume Control icon is displayed with red cross. When I click it it says:

There are some other reportings of this problem on the ubuntu forum, and there seems to have been a problem around the same time with the latest kernel included in Feisty (coincidence?). Here's the forum thread in particular that I'm monitoring:
