Bug Description

Binary package hint: compiz-gtk

Hi.
On a Feisty daily (12Apr2007) with ATI Radeon 7000 Dual Head (http://www.vfxweb.com/index.php?productid=10506), but only one monitor connected. Compiz appears to get confused about screen width.

I have a 1280x1024 X session running XFCE. I start compiz from the CLI with 'compiz --replace'.

Compiz functions OK (I get wobbly windows etc) but the backdrop is truncated to 1024. The area to the right is blank, widows can be placed there but leave debris when moved.

Top XFCE panel only covers the area of the backdrop. The lower XFCE panel is only 1024 wide, but is centered and overlaps the blank area.

When I maximise a window it only fills the 'backdrop' area. I'll attach a screen shot.

I am yet to find a way to configure compiz, so maybe there is a setting wrong somewhere.....

Cheers,
Simon.

This is because your max texture size is smaller than your screen resolution. What video card/driver are you using? You may be able to work around with with driconf.

Hi,
Actually droping X depth to 16 bit seems to make the problem go away.... however I've manage to stuff the system somehow, in that I don't have a window manager started with Compiz.

I guess I'll have to either have to find what been broken, or re-install (which might be quicker).

Hi again.
Just to confirm, dropping screen depth to 16 bits works OK (i.e. full witdth). The window manager problems were due (I think) to a corrupt GCONF.

When in 24bit, I attempted to solve this through DRICONF but was unable to find any settings which prevented the problem occuring.

Well it was working.... but after installing Xubuntu Feisty (Release Candidate) I'm back to the same problem regardless of whether X is running 16bit or 24bit.

I did notice that glxinfo is reporting a 32bit visual

With today's update, there was an improvement. I tried to enable "Normal effects" and got the message "Desktop effects could not be enabled". This is much better than the surprising result from before (see my Screenshot attachment), but the message was not particularly helpful.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. In the development cycle for Intrepid there have been some vast improvements in the open source ati video driver and we could use your help testing them. Could you please download the latest Alpha CD image of Intrepid and test this particular bug just using the Live CD? You can find the latest image at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . Your testing can help make Ubuntu and the open source ati driver even better! Thanks in advance.
