Bug Description

HOW TO REPRODUCE:

Open several apps at the same time to provoke a high GPU or RAM load, and try to reveal and using the launcher with the mouse.

WHAT SHOULD HAPPEN:

Windows should just grey out until responsive.

WHAT HAPPENS:

The launcher reveals and hides inconsistently even though the mouse is still hovering over it, making it nearly impossible to switch between windows or launch another app. It seems the launcher very frequently "looses ability to feel" that the pointer is still on top. A natural user response is to touch the edge several times to reveal it, ending up in seeing the launcher hiding and revealing frequently even when the user is doing something else afterwards.

EXTRA INFORMATION

This happens to me on my Samsung N310 netbook with Ubuntu 12.10 up to date. I already have upgraded from 1 GB of RAM to 2 GB so my machine could handle 12.04.
It happens when either using the netbook screen or an external monitor, but it might still be related to Bug #1069242.

Bug #1070735 concerns the panel glitch that was associated with this problem, and has been fixed.

See attached video to understand better. Whoopsie appearing, reporting a Dmedia crash, is not linked to this (first time it happened).

I think it's due to either RAM or GPU load. I simulated a full CPU load, and wasn't able to reproduce this.

Thanks Bilal for testing this. I updated the description.
Could it be that it is specific to my hardware?
I neever experienced this before 12.10

Status changed to 'Confirmed' because the bug affects multiple users.

I still have this problem with 12.10 up to date with proposed.

It's not just the launcher that is a problem, but the whole system is very frequently very sluggish...

Attached is a screenshot of the system monitor CPU graph when this happens. The CPU load goes most of the time up to 100%, whereas the RAM stays at 60% in that case (just Chromium, PCManFM and Thunderbird are open).

Does this tell you anything else?

I am really willing to fix this as this is my primary computer for home and work and it just slows me down so much... I reckon I use twice as much time to get things done... I am trying to use lighter apps, like PCManFM, but it doesn't help...

Please let me know what extra information I can provide.

Cheers
