Bug Description

I upgraded to 12.10 and installed
ubuntu-gnome-desktop
ubuntu-gnome-default-settings
and switched over to gdm, expecting to have music controls on the lock screen (which is very nice, by the way)
I also added the gnome 3.6 ppa (http://ppa.launchpad.net/gnome3-team/gnome3/ubuntu)

I have tried with either banshee or rhythmbox playing music, neither of them cause any controls to appear on the lock screen. This question has been asked at http://askubuntu.com/questions/204813/gnome-lock-screen-screensaver-is-missing-music-controls without any answers

Lock Screen Notifications also not working in my case.

Tim Lunn (darkxst) wrote :

Enabling of lock screen notifications requires gnome-control-center 3.6, which is not shipped with quantal.

You should however be able to manually enable lock-screen notifications with gsettings with the following command (or use dconf-editor):

gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.screensaver show-notifications true

I'm closing this bug since the GNOME developers have decided to disable lock screen notifications by default (to protect privacy) and we don't intend to override their decision.

wow that's awesome, thanks!
but it seems it's not working for Banshee for me, is that supposed to be like that right now? I don't mind switching to rhythmbox if so.

yeh, I believe its just rhythmbox for now. They are planning to add MPRIS support at some stage (probably in 3.8) though, so then it should work with most music apps.

Could I suggest that you add some configuration setting somewhere since I agree with teh privacy issue, but also think this is useful for folks who don't mind having some notifications? Just a thought to make it easier for some folks that may not remember to make the suggestion you posted. (Read: Make it more accessible to general public :)
