Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.20

I've upgraded last night. My Dell Inspiron 8200 boots perfectly.
I had nvidia-glx installed, and after the upgrade got a black screen. Installed nvidia-glx-legacy.
After booting, the desktop is not responsive after ~5 mins of working with the brwoser mainly, and I need to cold boot.
Restarting with pci=noapic seems to help.

1. Upgrade from Edgy with update-manager -d
2. Enable nvidia-glx-legacy

What video card does it have (give us the output of lspci -v if you don't know)?

Are you using compiz or beryl?

nvidia-glx-legacy isn't really the right driver for a GeForce4.

Can you indicate whether you have the same issue using nvidia-glx?

Punting from linux-source-2.6.20 -> linux-restricted-modules-2.6.20 because nvidia binary only driver is in use.

Well, with the nvidia-glx you get the famous "black screen". AFAIK,
GeForce4 440 Go requires the legacy drivers, and it does actually
work, sans the APIC.

Its true though that I was able to use this card with a 1.0-96xx
driver before w/o any problems, but not with the nvidia-glx package in
Ubuntu.

Setting back to unconfirmed and REALLY punting from linux-source-2.6.20 -> linux-restricted-modules-2.6.20 this time...

There are essentially three sets of "supported" nvidia drivers provided by NVIDIA (see http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/1.0-9755/README/appendix-a.html ). In Feisty nvidia-glx-legacy corresponds to the 71xx series of drivers, nvidia-glx corresponds 96xx series and nvidia-glx-new the 97xx series.

NVIDiA brands all cards not supported by the 97xx as legacy thus causing large amounts of confusion all round.

NVIDIA cards being used in laptops may need extra configuration to work correctly:
http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/1.0-9755/README/appendix-i.html
This is compounded by the fact that Feisty no longer hard codes monitor ranges into xorg.conf and the nvidia binary driver seems to be weak at correctly probing supported resolutions (see bugs like Bug #91292 (so the nvidia-glx driver probably works but needs help finding the right resolutions).

Does adding
Option "UseDisplayDevice" "DFP"
to the Screen section of /etc/X11/xorg.conf make any difference when you are using nvidia-glx?

Yes. I managed to get that working since yesterday. No problems with
the nvidia-glx package when using these settings.

p.s. Seems like openSUSE 10.2 has the same problem with
detecting/settings things right.

Uri
