60Hz refresh frequency only on live cd

Bug Description

I just tested the Feisty LiveCD @ i386.

It started X in a very high resolution 2000-something x something else, but only 60Hz refresh rate, which makes my (CRT) screen unusable.

I attempted to increase the refresh frequency and lowering the resolution (since that's the usual tradeoff) using Gnome's screen resolution preferences thingy. However, even at low resolutions, 60Hz was the only alternative.

In Edgy I have set 1600x1200@85Hz using the Gnome preferences.

According to lspci, my graphics card is:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GeForce 6200 (rev a1)

Not being able to run higher refresh frequencies than 60Hz makes it impossible for me to upgrade to Feisty.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Could you please add your '/etc/X11/xorg.conf' file and your '/var/log/Xorg.0.log' file as attachments to your bug report? Thanks in advance.

Both requested files provided, setting to unconfirmed.

Default resolution for the live CD is 2048x1536@60Hz, I have tried down to 640x480 without getting any choice but 60Hz for refresh frequency.

Johan:
You may want to try setting HorizSync and VertRefresh on the liveCD /etc/X11/xorg.conf to the exact settings that your monitor manual specifies (and then restarting gdm) to see whether any new options become available...

Worked around update frequency troubles by modding my xorg.conf, this isn't blocking my upgrade any more. Thanks!

Some questions remain though that you may want to look into:
* Removing the HorizSync and VertRefresh lines from the generated xorg.conf and letting Xorg autodetect those values resolved the update frequency problem for me.

* I had to add "1600x1200" to the Display subsections of Section "Screen" to get 1600x1200.

Sounds like you're suffering from a variation (wrong refresh rate rather than wrong resolution) of Bug #3731 ...

I suspect this is fixed now, If you have problems with Hardy alpha2 or later, please reopen. In that case it's likely a bug in nv driver.

I have another monitor now than when I reported this, but it seems to work fine now.
