Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-manager

After upgrading from Edgy to Feisty (via apt-get dist-upgrade), with all of my system in French (since the first install) the update-manager is not translated. All other programs are in French. I have only tested French and don't know if this is the case for other languages.

Doing apt-get install --reinstall language-pack-fr-base solves the problem immediately.

This should happen automatically, during dist-upgrade, so that users don't see English only programs.

Thanks for your bugreport.

Can you please attach the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade ? This will help us diagnose the problem.

Thanks,
 Michael

/var/log/dist-upgrade contains 3 files:

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 21986 2007-04-20 10:38 main.log
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 2007-04-20 17:58 term.log

The two non-empty ones are attached.

I can confirm the problem too (on a french system). Forcing reinstallation of the base language pack fixed it. Judging from other bug-reports, it seems that this bug happens with other (all ?) localized versions.

Do you need my logs too ?

Confirming, multiple reports (including my own experience) that update-manager is in English unless you reinstall a language pack after the upgrade.

I did notice this also on one computer of my own. The update-manager.mo simply was not there in language-pack-fi-base (the file was not installed, and it was not shown with dpkg -L language-pack-fi-base), but reinstalling the package added it. I just don't understand how it was possible since the language packs were downloaded from the Internet anyway.

Confirm Timo's comment on a French install:
- /usr/share/locale-langpack/fr/LC_MESSAGES/update-manager.mo not installed after the Edgy to Feisty dist upgrade
- This file gets installed after issuing: sudo apt-get install --reinstall language-pack-fr-base

However, in /var/log/dist-upgrade/term.log , I found this:

Préparation du remplacement de language-pack-fr-base 1:6.10+20061019 (en utilisant .../language-pack-fr-base_1
%3a7.04+20070412_all.deb) ...
isant .../foomatic-filters_3.0.2-20070323-0ubuntu1_all.deb) ...
Dépaquetage de la mise à jour de language-pack-fr-base ...
Remplacés par des fichiers du paquet language-pack-gnome-fr déjà installé... <-- Is that normal ?
Remplacement de fichiers dans l'ancien paquet language-pack-kde-fr-base ...

This occurence shown above: "Replaced with files from package ... already installed" only appears 2 times in /var/log/dist-upgrade/term.log
When installing language-pack-en-base:
- Remplacés par des fichiers du paquet language-pack-gnome-en déjà installé...
Then, when installing language-pack-fr-base:
- Remplacés par des fichiers du paquet language-pack-gnome-fr déjà installé...
