I'm actually not having any problems with open office at all anymore. I can't remember what I did that fixed it.

One thing that it may have been was that I once accidentally deleted all files from my system with the string "file.so" in them. Using apt-file, I think I saw that there was at least one open-office related package with such a match in one of its files' filenames, and simply reinstalled that package.

I can't be sure though. I just know that everything is working great.
