Bug Description
Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.20
After upgrading from edgy to feisty, my hard drive is now much louder when it is being accessed.
If I select the old (edgy) kernel on startup, it is quiet again. (I think the kernel versions are 2.6.20 and 2.6.17).
To try and describe the sound, I would say normally the hard drive makes a fairly dull sound when being accessed, but now it is a much louder, higher-pitched sound, more like what I remember the hard drive in my old 286 sounding like.
I do not think this is a duplicate of bug 67810 or 17878, becuase the noise is only present when I do something that makes the hard drive work hard.
For example, on startup or when opening F-Spot. Similar tasks under edgy were/are much quieter.
I'm using a SATA drive (Seagate ST3250823AS), on an nForce 4 motherboard, running the AMD64 version.
I have tried adding "noatime" to /etc/fstab, which didn't seem to make a difference.
It was also suggested I disable the swap partition, this also made no difference.
