gaim reports "unable to add" on startup

Bug Description
Binary package hint: gaim
Gaim give a message on startup saying:
Unable to add
Could not add the buddy 1 for an unknown reason. The most common reason for this is that you have the maximum number of allwed buddies in your buddy list.
I started getting this error upon upgrading from ubuntu 6.10 to 7.4, to ensure it was not the suggested problem I deleted one use of each type off my buddy list. count now sits at 82 contacts.
I did not add any extra contacts onto the list to cause this problem
