Bug Description

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

If you have already opened a document in OpenOffice.org Writer and add a printer to the system, OpenOffice.org does not detect this printer until you close and reopen the application. Running spadmin manually while OO.o is open will detect the printer, but the running instance does not get updated.

This is more an irritation than a bug, but its still an irritation. Using Fiesty on x86-32.

Package: openoffice.org
Version: 1.1.3-9
Followup-For: Bug #290016

The CUPS remote printer must be detected when OOo is launched, or the
printer will not be recognized until OOo is restarted. If the remote
printer is online before OOo is launched, all is fine.

On my network, OOo on computer A (sarge) prints to a remote printer on
computer B. As long as B is online when A is started and OOo is
started, printing is fine.

However if computer B is subsequently started after computer A, the
printer will not be visible to OOo in computer A.

$ lpstat -a on computer A correctly shows the remote printer status in
all cases, so the bug is in OOo and not in cupsys.

OOo apparently only checks for available printers at startup.

Hope this helps.

In a quickly look for across bugs, I become to bug 2625999 [0] and
message from Vesa Savolainen.

I find psprint.conf into /etc/openoffice.org, change "Command=" for
"Command=/usr/bin/kprinter", we only use Kde, and for the moment all is ok.

I hope this helps, and sorry for my very bad english.

I have the same problem. Is it possible that OO.o looks for
/etc/printcap whereas the default Debian configurations in cupsd.conf is
to generate the printcap file as

Printcap /var/run/cups/printcap

/etc/printcap on my local system is an empty file.

Cheers,
Michael

I have /etc/printcap. With Cups. It's a symlink: (And I didn't create it
myself)
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 22 2005-12-23 23:47 /etc/printcap -> /var/run/cups/printcap
[ created by cupsys-bsds postinst afais ]

Anyway, grepping for printcap in OOos source gives me nothing so it must
be some cups problem that the link isn't there, reassigning....

Rene

I guess you are right, OOo does not parse /etc/printcap itself anymore,
it directly uses libcupsys to query for existing printers. My problem
was actually something else:
I very occasionally use the printer so I start cupsd on demand. If cupsd
is started after OOo has been started, OOo shows an empty printer list.
If I start cupsd in advance printing from OOo works perfectly.
So I'm reassigning this bug to OOo again as it obviously has problems if
cupsd is not already running on application startup. (Other applications
like kprinter don't have such a problems, they detect changes to the
printer spooling system instantenous).
