Like it says, I clicked on one of my friends on the MSN network and then Kopete crashed just like that. This was on Kubuntu Feisty.

Is this a problem with a newer version of Ubuntu and Kopete?
If possible, could you test with the kde4 version of kopete? (sudo apt-get install kopete-kde4 in Hardy)
