Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

In the panel system-->preferences-->screenresolution only 800 x 600 is available as a choice.
The 7.04 CD originally started in 800 x 600 so the installation was difficult to read. I moved the top and bottom bars to the right and left to be able to read the bottom lines to accept the setup parameters.
After installation the screen switched to 1024 x 768. I worked with it now for a few days. This morning the system switched back again to 800 x 600 and nothing else was possible in the menu to choose for.
Booting the old 6.06 gave no problems: 1024 x 768 as usual.

Hi Hans,

Yes, this poor resolution detection is a known issue. I've written up a bunch more info about this issue on bug #3731 about why it happens and how to work around it, and will mark this a duplicate of that one.

I would love it if you could identify anything unusual about your setup and add it to bug 3731 - such as if you use any adapters for your monitor connection, if the monitor uses DVI rather than VGA connectors, or anything else. This could help in narrowing down when this bug happens.

Dear Olivier,

Indeed, a CRT (Daewoo 518X) and it always worked fine, both in windows
and ubuntu 6.06 and 6.10 at 1024 x 768.
The problem described is exactly my problem so I will follow the
discussion. Thanks very much for the tip
By the way, the installation was switched to 800 x 600 (part of the
installation information was outside the screen, had to move the top and
botomm bar to the left and right side of the screen) but after rebooting
it switched to 1024 x 768....Till 2 days ago...It swiched to 800 x 600
and I can choose now also 640 x 480....both @50 Hz refresh rate. In 6.10
it was 61 Hz and 1024 x 768

Interesting! Great to hear that fixed things. We've arrange to ensure xresprobe is installed on all installations (in Feisty, xresprobe was left out of the default installs), so that should hopefully fix this issue permanently.
