Bug Description

I just upgraded to feisty with the help of the little adept.

First I must say it's the smoothest and least "worky" OS upgrade _ever_. VERY well done.

I've some usability observations.

After saying yes and next a number of times the upgrader concluded that I needed more disk-space in (/var/...). I got enough disk space by running "apt-get clean" - since I've been upgrading my machine regularly there were a lot of packages still in the cache. Adept might offer to do the clean for me, or say that I might try this to free up space. In all I needed almost 2G free space on my / to be able to upgrade. Zapping some oldish logs for the user might be another idea to reclaim space semi-automatically.

There might be more information up front about what kind of undertaking this would be: "Warning: A upgrade may take anything from 1 to 8 hours depending on your Internet speed and how fast your computer is."

It would be cool if there was a "Start downloading now, and bug be about completing the upgrade later." option.

The second suggestion, a notification/warning on how long the upgrade will take has already been implemented in the upgrade tool for upgrading from feisty to gutsy.

Just used the tool to upgrade to hardy. Very nice again.

The warning about how long this can take seems to have been lost. My mother would be angry with me because the opration took so long and she felt obliged to watch the whole thing "just in case". "I have to sleep son!"

Let's stay true to *nix philosophy, please. Simple tools that work together, but that do their job well. There are already clean-up tools. If update-manager runs into a low disk space situation it should give usable, clear-cut advice and instructions (bug 523004), but point to other tools for more complex tasks.

The points raised by Jani are helpful observations and valid. I think they should mostly be fixed elsewhere, though, IMHO.

As the estimated time is shown in the updater, as mentioned in comment 1, and the other part (automatically freeing up disk space) is tracked in bug #291342, I am marking this as a duplicate of that one.
