Bug Description

Vidalia is a cross-platform controller GUI for Tor, built using the Qt framework. Using Vidalia, you can start and stop Tor, view the status of Tor at a glance, and monitor Tor's bandwidth usage. Vidalia also makes it easy to contribute to the Tor network by helping you set up and manage your own Tor server.

Due to the architecture of vidalia it is impossibile to get it starting tor in a debian like system.

Vidalia is also part of the default tor install on a windows system.

I sussecfully packaged the newest vidalia for Ubuntu Gutsy. It can be found in my PPA: https://launchpad.net/%7Eadnarim/+archive . It's tested and fully working with Tor.

There's only one drawback. Tor is packed in such a way, that it is setup as service and starting while booting. That's a problem because Vidalia starts Tor by its own. And there can't run two instances of Tor at the same time. So we have two solutions:
 * First and imo the best solution is changing the Tor-package not to autostart tor. I will make a package for that in the next days.
 * Second, we could tell the users that they have to kill tor and remove it from all runlevels before starting vidalia for the first time.

What do you think about it?

Aaand now it's too late for Ibex. There's always Jaunty Jackelope, right?

The move to the new 0.2 version of Tor at bug 261693 would probably be a good time to change the autostart thing, if that isn't already in.

Yesterday i installed Tor, Privoxy and Vidalia on Ubuntu 8.04.
But Vidalia cant run its own Tor process, but on vidalia faq page i find how "attach" vidalia to an existing tor process.
http://trac.vidalia-project.net/wiki/FAQ#ExistingTor
(when this trying, disable tor and vidalia)
open torrc (tor setting file)
$ sudo gedit /etc/tor/torrc
make new first line and insert:
ControlPort 9051
save.
Now start tor (as root) and than vidalia (not as root). After few seconds vidalia is reporting "Tor is running" and yellow onion is changed to green.
(dont forget start privoxy or what you use)
