Bug Description

Hardware: ASUS P4P800-MX motherboard (has Intel 865GV integrated graphics); ASUS EN7300LE/HTD/128M (nVidia GeForce 7300 LE).

This combination of motherboard and video controller causes the Dapper and Feisty desktop installation CDs to fail to boot.

The problem can be fixed by blacklisting (or otherwise disabling) the kernel modules for the m/b's integrated graphics (agpart and intel_apg).

Until you folks fix this problem, I know of two work arounds. (1) pull the video card; do the installation using the integrated video; then install the restricted modules for nvidia and blacklist the two modules above; finally re-install the video card. (2) remaster the installation cd to make the required changes.

I used the first method to install dapper. I've worked also to remaster the dapper install cd (by blacklisting the modules) so that it will boot, but there are still some rough edges that I have to work through via command line before I can run startx and see the Ubuntu desktop. Some help in this area would be appreciated.

I do want to emphasize that this is not just a dapper problem. I downloaded the feisty release iso to check to see if this problem had been fixed and it hadn't.

Thank you for your bug report.

Punting from Ubuntu -> linux-source-2.6.20 because intel-agp is provided by linux-image-2.6.20-15-generic.

Al:
You might also be able to workaround the issue by booting with the agp=off kernel parameter...

I confess I hadn't, until now, tried an exhaustive set of approaches to
get the feisty cd to boot. Anyway, the short story is that nothing I
know of can make the stock cd boot.

I set the kernel parameters to "agp=off s" and removed "quiet splash
--". This still crashed, although less mysteriously. I also tried safe
graphics mode. It failed. I do think that until the modules agpart and
intel_agp can be defeated, there is no hope for this hardware and the
official cd.

Fortunately, I'm pretty happy with dapper, so I'll wait until you Ubuntu
guys sort it out. :-) -- al

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug does not meet the criteria for a stable release update and is being marked as Won't Fix for this particular version of the kernel. You can learn more about the stable release update process at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates .
However, the issue that you reported is one that should be possible to test with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Gutsy Gibbon. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the actively developed kernel. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ .
If you do decide to test with the development release of Ubuntu please comment on this bug report and include at least the minimal information requested at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies . Thanks again and we appreciate your help.
