Bug Description

Binary package hint: totem

I have a Radeon Mobility M6 LY on my laptop, and I am using the ati module for xorg. When I try to play a video I get the ouput on the laptop's screen just fine - but no output on the external monitor.
BUT if I open a video in the browser (via totem-plugin) the external monitor shows the output just fine, too!? It works as long as I have a video opened in the browser.

Thank you for your bug. What version of Ubuntu do you use? Do you use totem-gstreamer or totem-xine? Does it happen using gst-launch-0.10 playbin uri=file:///path/to/video? Does it happen with an another software?

I use Feisty + totem-xine - but I already have this problem since Edgy (I thought it was working in Dapper - but I'm not sure anymore). Strange thing is - I also have a Omnibook with a i830 chipset - and it's the same behaviour there - which makes me kind of suspect that it is more xorg than driver related.
Also when I use mplayer with opengl output it works fine.

I had a problem similar to this and turned out to be a permissions issue. Something to do with the external display. Try running Totem with sudo and see if the problem goes away. Ex. # sudo totem (filename).

does it work fine with totem-gstreamer? and xine-ui?

Totem-gstreamer doesn't work either. Xine-ui works when I switch to OpenGl output also.

looks like an xv bug of the video driver then. Which one do you use? It's likely to work if you use gstreamer-properties to change the videosink then

gstreamer-properties is set to Autodetect. In xine I tried xv and x11 and both were not working.

On my notebook I use the ati driver - on the omnibook the i912 driver.

I have the same problem on a Thinkpad R50 with Radeon Mobility M7 LW (7500). The Ubuntu version is Feisty, the driver is ati and I use totem-xine (I think).

Maybe this is a duplicate of https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/55646 . Please check out the workaround.

I have a similar problem with a Kubuntu Gutsy running on a thinkpad X31

With Edgy, the external monitor would always work.
With Gutsy, it only works if I start X after plugging it in.
