As a sidenote: I pointed the automatix guys to this bug report, since it was not the first one.

Hello. This error seems to be a freak incident in which the bug reporter's apt cache file got corrupted during an apt update. (This could happen with any apt repository.. not just Automatix). Please do the following from terminal to fix this situation:
 sudo rm -f /var/cache/apt/*.bin
 sudo apt-get update

Hello Arnav,

seems that automatix users get into this trouble more often. See the duplicates.

Cheers,

Sebastian

The issue at hand with thekompany-support is isolated. The package was
broken and we fixed it within 10 minutes as soon as we realized that apt
broke. now everything is fine. too bad 200 people did an apt-get update in
that 10 minute time frame..
anyways, thanks again for keeping me in the loop.
It all goes towards better overall support.

The two other reports which have been reported as duplicates are in fact not duplicates of this report.

Changed in synaptic:
status: Unconfirmed → Rejected

I don't know if this is the same, but I get

E: Malformed line 57 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list (dist parse)
E: The list of sources could not be read.
Go to the repository dialogue to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

and synaptic closes

It surely should be able to cope with malformed lines in source list (i.e. just ignore the line)

I too got the error: E: The package cache file is corrupted
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

I did as suggested above by Arnav Ghosh, and that seemed to fix the problem! Thanx.
I'm still running Hardy Kubuntu. Ric

Hello I am new to ubuntu,
Thank you for everyone posting their help.
I have this appear when I try to access the synaptic pack manager:

E: Malformed line 10 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list (dist)
E: The list of sources could not be read.
Go to the repository dialog to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

Then I tried to do what Arnav Ghosh suggested and in the terminal it says this:

nathan@Passionate:~$ sudo rm -f /var/cache/apt/*.bin
nathan@Passionate:~$ sudo apt-get update
E: Malformed line 10 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list (dist)
nathan@Passionate:~$

I do not know what a source list is, or where to find it could someone help me please?
Thank you so much for your time and patience.

anyone know why it is denied and how I can fix this?
Thank you for your help:)
