Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.20-15-generic

Attempting to boot the standard feisty install CD-ROM on an ASUS M2400N laptop fails as the kernel sets up PCI resources. The bios on this laptop has been set back to optimal defaults.

On a partition with edgy on it, it was upgraded to feisty without major issue (gnome-main-menu and network-manager applets died but that was it). The edgy kernel boots fine (only after fixing the initramfs to use modules piix, ide-disk, and ide-cd) but feisty kernel 2.6.20-15 and 2.6.20-14 fail at the same point. The last three lines of the messages to screen read

[ 46.726134] ACPI: bus type pci registered
[ 46.726479] PCI: Using configuration type 1
[ 46.726537] Setting up standard PCI resources

At this point boot stops.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug does not meet the criteria for a stable release update and is being marked as Won't Fix for this particular version of the kernel. You can learn more about the stable release update process at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates .
However, the issue that you reported is one that should be possible to test with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Gutsy Gibbon. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the actively developed kernel. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ .
If you do decide to test with the development release of Ubuntu please comment on this bug report and include at least the minimal information requested at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies . Thanks again and we appreciate your help.

Yes the Tribe 5 CD and the most recent kernel (2.6.22-11-generic) as of yesterday fails. I've cut down the extra option needed to 'nolapic'. Without this option present the system hits the "Starting up..." prompt and then either soft resets (or once simply stopped loading). Using a non quiet boot, it hits these lines and then stops:

PCI: Using configuration type 1
Setting up standard PCI resources
ACPI: EC: GPE 0x1c, ports=0x66, 0x63

Per a decision made by the Ubuntu Kernel Team, bugs will longer be assigned to the ubuntu-kernel-team in Launchpad as part of the bug triage process. The ubuntu-kernel-team is being unassigned from this bug report. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies for more information. Thanks.

The 18 month support period for Gutsy Gibbon 7.10 has reached its end of life -

new Jaunty Jackalope 9.04 release and confirm if this issue remains -
http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/releasenotes/904overview. If the issue still exists with the Jaunty
release, please update this report by changing the Status of the "linux (Ubuntu)"
