Bug Description

Binary package hint: aptitude

After an upgrade to feisty, I tried running aptitude as an ordinary user in visual mode to verify success of upgrade. On startup, aptitude marks 526 packages for deletion and reports 105 broken packages. If the deleted packages are manually changed to install, there are no longer any broken packages reported....

In command-line mode, aptitude does not report these broken packages (e.g. on a normal install or remove). They can be seen, however with a search:

aptitude search '~aremove' | head -10
id adept - package management suite for KDE
id adept-batch - command line install for Adept
id adept-common - package manager for KDE -- common files
id adept-installer - simple user interface for application mana
id adept-manager - package manager for KDE
id adept-notifier - system tray notifier of available system u
id adept-updater - system update tool for KDE
id afio - archive file manipulation program
id akregator - RSS feed aggregator for KDE
id amarok - versatile and easy to use audio player for

aptitude search '~b' | head -10
iB apache2-utils - utility programs for webservers
iB apport-qt - Qt4 frontend for the apport crash report s
iB blt - the BLT extension library for Tcl/Tk - run
iB cdrdao - records CDs in Disk-At-Once (DAO) mode
iB comerr-dev - common error description library - headers
iB compiz-gtk - OpenGL window and compositing manager - Gt
iB desktop-effects - preferences applet for configuring desktop
iB devscripts - Scripts to make the life of a Debian Packa
iB evolution - groupware suite with mail client and organ
iB f-spot - personal photo management application

A "dpkg --check" returns no errors

Synaptic reports no broken packages.

An "apt-get check" reports no errors.

sudo apt-get check
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done

This is the version of aptitude:

apt-show-versions -a -p aptitude
aptitude 0.4.4-1ubuntu3 install ok installed
aptitude 0.4.4-1ubuntu3 feisty

I believe that this problem may be related to debian bug 411123 and that it may have been fixed in debian's aptitude 0.4.4-3

for you? Can you try with latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.
