Feisty not detecting printer

Bug Description

I have installed Ubuntu 7.04 on an HP Pavalion 753N with an HP Deskjet 610CL attached to the printer port. Using System -> Administration -> Printing, I attempted to add my printer. Printer -> AddPrinter takes me to a wizard that does not detect my printer. Printer type = Local or Detected Printer. Use a detected printer is selected, but a message in the box below says no printers detected. The Deskjet is connected and turned on. Since I am a noob, you can assume that the system is unchanged from a fresh install. Thanks.

I found these two lines repeated numerous times in my /var/log/user.log

May 5 15:53:32 localhost hp: unable to send ProbeDevices: Broken pipe

Hope that helps.

The add printer wizard of the GNOME CUPS manager is also able to set up printers which wer not auto-detected. Select "Use another printer by specifying a port:" on the first page of the wizard near the bottom. There choose "LPT #1" in the drop-down list. On the second page choose your printer model manually if it does not get selected automatically. Then your printer should work. Please tell here whether it really works.

For setting it up with HPLIP (allows ink level check and nozzle cleaning) try

sudo apt-get install python-qt3
sudo hp-setup

and then follow the steps in the wizard. Does this work?

Changed in cupsys:
status: Unconfirmed → Needs Info

Note that if the printer was turned on only after booting that then the printer model cannot be auto-detected by most printer setup tools, as the real printer auto-detection happens when the kernel modules are loaded. Only printerdrake reloads the kernel modules when starting its add printer wizard. printerdrake is planned to be the printer setup tool of Gutsy. See

https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/printerdrake

for more info.

Till,

Thanks for your time. Sure enough printer is detected when it is on at the time the computer is booted. I will look into upgrading to HPLIP.

Till,

Sorry for the long time responding.

I installed python-qt3 this evening and followed the hp-setup. Yes, it worked, with one problem.

I am using a DeskJet 610CL with standard US letter (8 1/2 x 11 in) paper. hp-toolbox "HP Device Manager" is showing "letter" for paper size on the "Print Settings" tab. The HP Printer Test Page is showing (in the box on the left labeled Imageable Area) that the page size is 8.0x10.21in. The box that surrounds the test page is offset towards the top. This is consistent with other things that I have printed - certain printouts have the top line cutoff.

How do I convince the system that I am using letter size paper?

$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure libpaper1

Pascal,

OK, I ran the dpkg-reconfigure. I am sorry to report that nothing seems to have changed. The entire printed image is shifted towards the top, often times cutting off part of the first printed line. Page size is still being reported as 8.0x10.21in.

Again, thanks for your time.
