vmware-server installs netkit-inetd and removes xinetd

Bug Description

This problem happens with the vmware-server package from the commercial repository on feisty (Kubuntu 7.04).

When installing the vmware-server package it will remove xinetd and replace it with netkit-inetd. I am no security specialist but I think xinetd should be used and not netkit-inetd. At least xinetd should not be removed because other services might still use it.

i habe installed vmware-server today and it removed xinetd, too. so there is a bad dependency i think.

Same here. Very strange! I do not want to remove my xinted!

And I do know why. The DEB file has an error in dependency:

Depends: netbase, netkit-inetd | inetd, update-inetd, vmware-server-kernel-modules...

it should probably read something like

Depends: netbase, netkit-inetd | inetd, update-inetd | xinetd, vmware-server-kernel-modules...

Please fix ASAP its easy.

As vmware-server is not available as package I attache this bug to xinetd as it is affected as well.

I fail to see how this is a problem in xinetd. The bug seems to be rather in the vmware-server package instead. Closing the bugtask for xinetd.

Changed in xinetd:
status: Confirmed → Invalid

it is currently not possible to create a bugtask against 'vmware-server'. This issue is documented now as bug #121765

while waiting for the bug to be fixed : is there a way to manually work around these erroneous dependency and install vmware-server without uninstalling xinetd ? Is there a nore appropriate place to ask this question ?
