frequent loss of printing. I have to re-install the printer driver frequently.

Till, I am unsure how to address this defect. Is there a reason why stderr sould be closed for the hpfax: backend? I have been able to write to it during testing without problems.

Don, for me this is also strange. I have simply seen this bug report and added you to it as it occurred with HPLIP. To me no other case of stderr access problem is known.
