Bug Description

Here is My computer Specs
Gigabyte 8vm800m
Pentium 4 3.0Ghz
Samsung 20GB (IDE)
Maxtor 200GB (SATA)
Liteon DVDRW
Generic 1024 DDR400 RAM
ATI 9200SE 128RAM Video card

Maxtor Hard disk have two partition
30GB for Windows XP (NTFS)
170GB for Data (NTFS)

Please notes that, when I had disabled DVDRW from BIOS, It saved the boot up time by almost 50 seconds.

When finished loaded desktop environment, the entire system become laggy and slow, for example, to minimize Firefox it took 1.7 seconds and maximize it took about 2 seconds.

Ruben Romero (huayra) wrote : Re: Ubuntu boot up very slow(ubuntu 7.04) - FIX

Hi

I fixed this one by going back to the 2.6.17-1X series kernel from EDGY.

The problem has to do with the kernel, without a doubt. When regressing the default kernel you MUST purge the newer kernels or else you end up booting with them.

The easiest way to deal with this is either editing your /boot/grub/menu.lst or removing the newer kernels.

It worked for me!

Even though is not the best option, it works!

There is a problem with kernel slowly booting 2.6.22-11-generic on Ubuntu 7.10 tribe 5.
kernel booting with 2.6.22-10-generic boots quickly.

The bug also affects, Ubuntu 7.04 release.
It seems to get stuck on the ubuntu opening load screen.

The machine is a Dell Optiplex gx150.

It eventually drops into BusyBox and says can't access tty, job control off.
It also reports Buffer I/O error on device sda, logical block.

I also noticed that once booted into 10 version of kernel, if a soft reboot is performed the machine loads quickly into 11version.

the dmesg.txt above is for version 10 boot. I'm trying to get the dmesg for 11 but its failing to get me to the login screen.

Now that the 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon release of Ubuntu is out (kernel 2.6.22-14), we were wondering if this is still an issue? Could you please download and try the new version of Ubuntu from http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download and report back your results. If the issue is still present in the new release, please attach the following information:

* uname -a > uname-a.log
* cat /proc/version_signature > version.log
* dmesg > dmesg.log

Please be sure to attach each file as a separate attachment. For more information regarding the kernel team bug policy, please refer to

The Hardy Heron kernel was recently uploaded for testing. We'd really appreciate it if you could try testing with this newer kernel and verify if this issue still exists. Unfortunately, the Hardy Heron Alpha1 LiveCD was released with the older 2.6.22 kernel. You'll have to manually install the newer Hardy Heron kernel in order to test. This should not be the case for Alpha2. However, here are the instructions to install (if you choose to do so):

1) edit the file /etc/apt/sources.list and add the following line:

deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu hardy main restricted

2) sudo apt-get update
3) sudo apt-get install linux-image-2.6.24-1-generic
4) reboot and select the new kernel from the grub menu

After you've tested, please feel free to revert back - ie boot into the old kernel, sudo apt-get remove linux-image-2.6.24-1-generic, and remove the line from /etc/apt/sources.list . Please update this report with your results. Thanks in advance!

Care to test the latest Hardy Alpha release and see if here is any improvement? You can download and try the new Hardy Heron Alpha release from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/hardy/ .
