Could you please try reproducing the problem with gutsy?

[Expired for k3b (Ubuntu) because there has been no activity for 60 days.]

confirmed in Ubuntu 7.04 - the Feisty Fawn
and it used to work. one of the updates probable broke the system.

I still can read CDs using the device. I did not try DVDs. The drive is a low end CD+DVD combo inside of simple HP box.

In the hardware info i see the DVD drive -

my bad
DH16DYS is apparently CD-ROM/DVD-ROM combo. indeed there is no writer. looks, like i am lost among all those PCs i have/had
