Bug Description

After the upgrade from 6.10 to 7.04 feisty fawn, i had a lot of trouble, why i upgraded ? bah...
I have a normal Pc for my job, is a fujitsu siemens esprimo.

First the Hardware abstraction Layer take a lot of time to load, i solved by disabling acpi, putting acpi=off in the grub menu.

Second the gnome desktop didn't work. You can see the GDM login but after the login the session hang just giving you a wallpaper and a gray square in the upper left corner.
I solved this by :
- deleting all the file in /tmp, because it seems that the previous orbit connection and settings give problem.
- I also deleted al directories in my home directory with gnome configuration : .gconf .gconfd .gnome .gnome2 .gnome2_private
- Remember to have a working le0 loopback interface otherwise gnome will not start.

And now ?

Now i have my network card that is not working correctly. I cannot make some connetcion in internet to same host.
For example i can see some sites and other not, without reason. Putting a proxy in the browser configuration solve the problem, but why ????
I can surf google website but i cannot see ubuntulinux.org, for example.
APT-GET and the graphical update manager have the same problem, maybe depend from the same reason like firefox cannot surf ubuntu site.

My Thunderbird mail client have the same problem, before the upgrade with hedgy 6.10 all was ok and works perfectly, afeter the upgrade i cannot get new messagge from my pop server,
To be correct i can connect, i see the STAT with for example 3 new messagges, i see the RET but the connection goes in timeout without get nothing.

Finally, less important, the sound card is not working. I try to change the setting in the audio manager but nothing happen... when i hit the TEST button i get :
audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! gconfaudiosink: Impossibile aprire la risorsa in scrittura. (Cannot open device for write)

I becoming crazy, i cannot understand what is wrong on the network and why something work and something not.
I am tired, i found the solution for the desktop and for HAL... and now are 2 days i hitting keys on my keyboard without results.

Any ideas ? Somebody have the same problems ?

Thanks, Graziano

Ok, i solved also the network problem.
Now i can surf wherever and my pop3 connection with thunderbird are working now.
Is a problem caming from the kernel, where was changed the parameter to activate the TCP WINDOW SCALING.

The TCP WINDOW SCALING is active by default in the kernel, but there are a lot of networking systems that doesn't understand windows scaling and they cannot comunicate.
For the RFC the tcp window scaling can be used only after a SYN-ACK connection, so the for SYN packet is exchanged and after when TCP Windows scaling begin to work the network communication goes in timeout.

Here is why i can see how many messages i have to download in thunderbird but i cannot get it.

Here is the solution :

as root user or with sudo
echo "0" > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_window_scaling

Just to see if solve your problem, if yes, you can make this change permanent by adding this line to the file /etc/sysctl.conf :

net.ipv4.tcp_default_win_scale = 0

Now you can surf anywhere you also and all the network application come back to work.
Yes, update-manager also.... finally !!! :-)

It's time to solve the sound problem now...

Hello,

again me.
I also had problem with Evolution.
After the last upgrade to the Evolution 2.10.1 in the Ubuntu 7.04 distribution, the filtering system doesn't work.
I use IMAP4 to connect to our exchange server.
When you hit CTRL-Y an error message says [no provider for protocol "mail"].
I noticed that the protocol system from Evolution 2.4 to the new 2.6 is changed from "file" to "mail", so the old reference saved by the migration now doesn't work.

You have to manually re-edit all your filtering rules and re-select the destination folders, after this all works again.

Good Luck !
