Ok, did some debuging & found that I needed a new directory for firmware /lib/firmware/"current kernel version"
Then installed the kernel & all was good! Go figure? I had to copy the ipw22*.* from the 2.6-20.13 folder into the current kernel folder for wireless to work but all ok now and am running on 2.6.22-3-generic

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and gutsy now has kernel version linux-image-2.6.22-14-generic. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Thanks in advance.

As there were no further problems reported with later Gutsy kernels, it seems this bug has been fixed by one of those updates. Therefore I will close this bug report. To reopen the bug report you can click on the current status, under the Status column, and change the Status back to "New". Thanks again!
