Bug Description

Binary package hint: nvidia-glx-new

Unable to load nVidia driver, running Gutsy and kernel 2.6.20-15-generic

I have checked this bugreport
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-restricted-modules-2.6.20/+bug/98641

Restricted Manager installs nvidia-glx,ver 9631.....

It also installs 2.6.20-15-386 ???

Manually installed nvidia-glx-new, fails to load driver.

RM must be a real mess. ! Maybe its better to send out a patch block
for all users.

Manual installs also fails to load nVidia.

I always follows this procedure

sudo nano /etc/default/linux-restricted-modules-common

DISABLED_MODULES="nv"

sudo apt-get install linux-headers-`uname -r` build-essential gcc gcc-3.4 xserver-xorg-dev
sudo apt-get --purge remove nvidia-glx nvidia-settings nvidia-kernel-common
sudo rm /etc/init.d/nvidia-*
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop
sudo sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-100.14.03-pkg1.run
sudo nvidia-xconfig --add-argb-glx-visuals
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start

Well... the same occurs with kernel 2.6.22-3

Can you please tell us if Gutsys kernels includes a blocking mechanism ?

They were removed during Feistys development. I am not going to run
Gutsy if developers chooses the GNU way against nVidia.

Restricted Manager is a mess.....

So "bless this mess"....;)

Well, up and running again with 3D drivers.

Alberto Milone helped me and this is a strange fault.
We needed to bypass Envys OS check and after that
drivers was installed.

But a NoPowerConnectorCheck warning blocked X-start.

After disabling of this check within xorg.conf everything was OK.

Compcomm here I come again... ;)

This sounds more like you are mucking too much with installing nvidia yourself (directly or via envy) Either way, I can't fixup our package to work better with your manual installation. Things work fine when installed stock.

Changed in linux-restricted-modules-2.6.22:
status: Unconfirmed → Rejected

Thanks for answering...

Well I have manually installed nVidia drivers so I can do it sleeping.
This time it was "mission impossible" beacuse of that the kernel rejected it.

Alberto helped me to bypass Envy beacuse of a OS check and it worked.

I proposed within Feistys development forum that a test procedure
for example Restricted Manager should be a good thing.

I have helped several lost nVidia owner with this challenge.

This procedure should always work...!

sudo nano /etc/default/linux-restricted-modules-common

DISABLED_MODULES="nv"

sudo apt-get install linux-headers-`uname -r` build-essential gcc gcc-3.4 xserver-xorg-dev
sudo apt-get --purge remove nvidia-glx nvidia-settings nvidia-kernel-common
sudo rm /etc/init.d/nvidia-*
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop
sudo sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-100.14.03-pkg1.run
sudo nvidia-xconfig --add-argb-glx-visuals
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start
