Bug Description

Binary package hint: xscreensaver

Hi all,
I am runing Ubuntu feisty 7.04. Installed xubuntu-desktop on top of it. I used xscreensaver-demo from CLI. There in Advanced Tab I used the Off option after sometime. While it stopped, it doesn't restart after clicking, moving the mouse doesn't make any difference. Don't know what the issue is, please lemme know.

5.04-2ubuntu2 was released today - please check if it makes any difference. I am not able to reproduce - do you have a custom application defaults file?

I think you have "xaos" installed. Do you get the same if you uninstall it?

The original issue of the screen not waking up, is that still valid?

Tormod, I have yet to check out the orginal issue, will do in sometime. What's interesting is what u say about xaos. I don't know what the issue is but xoas doesn't show a conflict.

Description: real-time interactive fractal zoomer
XaoS allows you to zoom and pan around a fractal in real time. It can display the animated fractals in graphical
 or even plain text mode.

It displays the Mandelbrot set or many other fractals and allows you to zoom smoothly into the fractal. Various
coloring modes are provided for both the points inside and outside the selected set. In addition, switching
between Mandelbrot and Julia fractal types is provided.

Other features include autopilot mode, palette changing, image saving, fractal inversion, filters, and a built
 in fractal tutorial.

Of course you're the expert so would be able to throw more light on the matter :)

As far as the custom application defaults file is concerned, I don't think I did any changes but just for your reference, here's

/etc/X11/app-defaults/XScreenSaver-nogl

/etc/X11/app-defaults/XScreenSaver-gl

and .xscreensaver in my /home/shirish/ directory.

I also get this dialog, Xscreensaver daemon doesn't seem to be running on display ":0.0" Launch it now?

Also 3-4 screensavers seem to be not installed, although the -data, -data-extra -gl and -gl-extra packages are installed.

Another interesting note, gnome-screensaver is installed, which the description says if installed, then this package is not needed. I'm sorry this is going like a Q&A rather than the simple bug which I did before.

disregard the last question/statement. I just found the answer at http://www.jwz.org/xscreensaver/faq.html#gnome-screensaver & hence purged/un-installed gnome-screensaver.

You should install either xscreensaver or gnome-screensaver. In both cases you can install the -data, -data-extra -gl and -gl-extra packages. Ubuntu comes with gnome-screensaver by default, so unless you have special needs I would recommend to keep it.

xaos doesn't work properly as a screensaver hack since it doesn't take the "-window-id" option. Please file a bug on xaos to get it fixed. Meanwhile we should take the xaos lines out of our app-default files. Can you please file a bug for this also? Then we can keep this bug report for the original issue :)

Hi Tormod,
submitted bug 189475 and bug 189477 . Please have a look at the bugs if anything is left out or needs to be changed. For now things look cool, although haven't used suspend, only using Standby after 1 minute and putting Suspend as well as off after 1440 minutes. Another question, why is there a never in Xscreensaver Preferences > Advanced > Display Power Management ? Of course if needed will file a bug about that too.
