Bug Description

Binary package hint: gdebi

It would be just great if Gdebi offered a "launch program" button in the dialog that notifies you that the program has been installed. Having the program's name and icon in it would be extra cool.

I think the attached image explains what I mean.

The GNOME panel should notify the user about new applications and mark them in a special way.

There is no infrastructure in the Debian package format to transport information about a contained application.

gnome-app-install offers you an option to launch a program just after installing it by double-clicking its icon or name; this involves no interaction with the gnome menubar, and made me think that something similar could be done in gdebi.

How does gnome-app-install do it? Isn't there a way that gdebi could replicate the process?

The dialog in gnome-app-install is only a workaround for a missing feature of the GNOME menu. Bascially we ship all the information with gnome-app-install in the app-install-data-* packages. So applications/packages not known to gnome-app-install cannot be handeled.

I don't think such a feature should belong to GDebi, as its purpose is different, but I haven't a strong opinion on that. If a patch is provided, we could start looking at this feature.
