I am new to packaging but I was looking at this. I went to their website and they are offering a Ubuntu .deb. Does this mean that packaging is not needed for it now?

No packaging is still needed to get it into the ubuntu repositories.

I see this has been open a long time. Are there any plans to package this yet? I wanted to use the .deb from BerliOS, but it is only for 386, and I am running on AMD64 :-(

One more thing: I am new to Launchpad, and I see this bug is for Debian, while the duplicate is for Ubuntu. Does that still make it a duplicate? Will it getting packaged ensure it is added to the Ubuntu repositories?

The bug is open in both debian and ubuntu. It doesn't look like anybody is working on getting it packaged right now.
