Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-manager

I finally decided it was time to upgrade from Edgy to Feisty. I start the Update Manager from the System>Administration menu. My current 'Edgy' system is reported to be up to date. It is reported that "New distribution release '7-04' is available". I click on the 'Upgrade' button.
I then press 'Upgrade' at the 'Release Notes' Dialog. I see a dialog with 'Downloading the Upgrade tool', then 'Upgrading Ubuntu to version 7.04'. After 'Modifying the software channels' I see a dialog box labeled 'Error during Update'. In the Edit box below I then see twice the message:

"Failed to fetch http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/feisty-security/main/binary-i386/Packages.bz2 Sub-process bzip2 returned an error code (2)".

I press 'Close' and the process stops. I can repeat this as many times as I want. I have run an apt-get update from a terminal. To no avail.

I downloaded the file manually and I can bunzip2 it successfully. Hope this helps...

A-ha! There were duplicate entries in /etc/apt/sources.list:

W: Duplicate sources.list entry http://security.ubuntu.com edgy-security/main Packages (/var/lib/apt/lists/security.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_edgy-security_main_binary-i386_Packages)
W: Duplicate sources.list entry http://security.ubuntu.com edgy-security/restricted Packages (/var/lib/apt/lists/security.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_edgy-security_restricted_binary-i386_Packages)
W: Duplicate sources.list entry http://security.ubuntu.com edgy-security/universe Packages (/var/lib/apt/lists/security.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_edgy-security_universe_binary-i386_Packages)

That fixed it.

Ok, to rephrase - removing redundant entries in sources.list fixed it and now I'm running the upgrade.

In my case there was a duplicate entry, which I corrected. But after correction the update still failed.
In fact, I may actually have upgraded from Dapper to Edgy by simply substituting Dapper for Edgy in sources.list. I can remember having done that once, but I can't remember if it was this computer. In which case I had a probably no standard sources.list to start with.

So I reduced /etc/apt/sources.list to a minimum, and now the upgrade is running.
Maybe the upgrade process should include an organisation step before actually updating the sources?

Thanks nyvalbanat.

They say it's not best practice to use apt-get to upgrade the distro
(there's an ubuntu upgrade guide somewhere) - not sure why that is.
Anyway, glad you were able to upgrade.

I have also hit this impasse and as a non tech tis is all very good but of no use to me.
There must be thousands of people like me who have abandoned windows (yuck) don't wish to go there again
Do they have a local friendly tech or do they just give up
I had great hopes of this distro giving me the latest version of open office data base without the bugs.
it seems a shame that it is so difficult when Ubuntu is such a great platform
i would like to learn the nitty gritty but don't know where to start i had no problems learning ms dos

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.

Changed status to confirmed. This is an old Edgy -> Feisty upgrade issue.
Some users have reported that removing duplicate sources.list entries fixes the problem. Others have struggled by further shrinking the sources.list but eventally succeeded. Seems like the issue is resolved.

We are closing his report because feisty has reached end-of-life. Please reopen if it's still an issue with newer release.
