Thanks for your bug report, more information is needed.

What version of Ubuntu are you using?
What brand and model is your keyboard and mouse.
How is your keyboard and mouse connected to your PC: PS/2, USB, wireless, ...

Try the following:
1. Direct after gnome login open a terminal and enter the following command:
   $ cp /var/log/Xorg.0.log ~/Xorg.0.log
2. Wait until your mouse and keyboard stop working.
3. Open a terminal by pressing Ctrl-Alt-F1.
4. Enter the following commands:
   $ LANG=C
   $ cp /var/log/Xorg.0.log ~/Xorg.0.log_tmp
   $ diff -ns ~/Xorg.0.log ~/Xorg.0.log_tmp > ~/Xorg.0.log_diff-ns
   $ cp /var/log/dmesg ~/dmesg_boot
   $ dmesg > ~/dmesg
   $ diff -ns ~/dmesg_boot ~/dmesg > ~/dmesg_diff-ns
5. Attach Xorg.0.log, Xorg.0.log_diff-ns, dmesg_boot and dmesg_diff-ns to this bug report.

I should point out that when the keyboard and mouse stop working, he is incapable of input, and thus cannot do what you've asked of him.

I found a workaround - use USB keyboard and mouse. Seems like it only affects PS2-devices.

Maybe, one day I reconnect the PS2 ones to my new Gutsy installation and see if it works. Until then this bug could be closed.

I wonder if my bug (154912) is related. I'm on a PS/2 KVM and while my mouse works fine, my keyboard stops working for some apps. Of course, the keyboard still works for getting to a console, or for switch desktops so I'm not having the exact same problem.

Frederik,
Do you still have this problem with Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy)?
If so please provide the information described here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKeyboardDetection and here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingMouseDetection.

I have this problem.

I'm working in a High School and they have some 2 labs with computers using this M7VIG 400 Biostar Motherboard.

They have a lot of problems with the mouse and keyboard, they suddenly stop working, but the computer is still running fine, they are both PS/2.

This is happening with Ubuntu 7.10, even running from the Live CD. I think its happening with the most updated packages too because I have tried everything to solve this problem.

Also, this seems to affect some computers more than others, but they all have exactly the same spec.
