Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

GNOME gnome-terminal 2.18.0

if I run "gnome-terminal --tab" or "gnome-terminal --tab-with-profile=Default" it opens a new _window_ instead a tab in the already opened window. I tried the command from several gnome-terminals, evertime the same.

BTW, this issue also exists in 2.16.1-0ubuntu1 (edgy) and 2.18.2-0ubuntu1 (gutsy). It probably is in every version of Ubuntu, since the upstream bug was opened in 2002, and it's not fixed yet.

It doesn't sound like upstream has any interest in fixing it. Apparently the "--tab" option was intended only to allow more than one tab in a new window; it was not supposed to open a new tab in an existing window.

There are two ways to fix this:

  - Changing the wording of "--help" to indicate the actual purpose of "--tab".
  - Make "--tab" do what "--help" says it does.

The second option is probably better, but it may be hard to get the change accepted upstream.

It's a little hard to believe the upstream bug is over 6 years old. Bounty, anyone? I'd put up $5.

Judging by the response of google to ""gnome-terminal --tab-with-profile=", and the upstream bug page ( http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=83203 ) , there's plenty of room to improve the docs _and_ add the "hoped for" functionality:

 -a --attach-tab-to-current-window-with-profile=PROFILENAME
Open a tab in the current window with the given profile name.

Please?
