Bug Description

This is basically the same as bug 824890 but that is said to have been fixed for Oineric and this is on Raring. If I am not mistaken, the policy here is to open a new bug.

With Active blur, the dash takes somewhat longer to appear and the animation is not smooth. With Static blur or No blur, it is quick (but it could be quicker, it still takes time and since I open the dash often, I do not see why there is a delay at all) and smooth. I would say with static blur or No blur, it takes under one second whereas with Active blur it takes about a second. The fact that it is not smooth gives it a much more slower feeling though.

With active blur, it takes three steps - it (1) dims everything right of launcher, then (2) blurs it and then (3) dims the launcher. There is always a delay between steps (1) and (2) and sometimes there is a slight delay between (2) and (3). If I repeat the operation, the second delay is sometimes absent. It seems it somehow caches something so it is sometimes fast, but not always (and almost never in normal usage as the cache does not stay long enough).

I hope my graphic card etc. got picked by ubuntu-bug.

With "Active Blur" enable dash and alt-tab takes minutes to activate. With "No Blur" or "Static Blur" dash is fast.

This starts happening after upgrade to Raring.

Marcus: for me it takes just one or two seconds. Yours is likely a different issue.

Grzegorz Galezowski (spectral) wrote :

For me, the slowdown started after 5th June, when I downloaded an update consisting of a bunch of libx11* and mesa updates.

The dash shows now in two or three steps, between then there's no fluent animation. Before this update, everything was super fluent.

On my side, the issue disappeared with today's updates of mesa. However, I think this needs confirmation from the issue originator, since his issue may have a different root cause.

Are you on raring or saucy? I am on raring an it is still slower with active blur than with no blur.

Active blur is slow on Integrated Graphics Chipset: Intel(R) GM45 which I think does blur in software instead of in hardware. Especially bad in VLC when playing a video.

Static blur flickers at a high rate when there is an animation (chrome tab loading throbber, flash)

No blur is much improved, but I need to set the launcher transparency to 230 or so or the dash text blends in with the background.

13.04 64 with intel graphics installer 1.02, same thing happened with stock packages.
