Bug Description

Samba disallows certain network users and crashes. Specifucally, Win7 service (Cobian backup 11) logged on as "local system" user cannot create folders in Samba share while I can manually do so and now crashed as well. This used to work perfectly well and suddenly stopped I assume there must have been a Samba update as I did not update Windows/Cobian machine and regularily update Ubuntu/Samba server.

The Samba 'panic action' script, /usr/share/samba/panic-action,
was called for PID 28333 (/usr/sbin/smbd).

This means there was a problem with the program, such as a segfault.
Below is a backtrace for this process generated with gdb, which shows
the state of the program at the time the error occurred. The Samba log
files may contain additional information about the problem.

If the problem persists, you are encouraged to first install the
samba-dbg package, which contains the debugging symbols for the Samba
binaries. Then submit the provided information as a bug report to
Ubuntu by visiting this link:

I presume this crash is reproducible? In that case, could you try a few things to isolate the problem, please?

As you say this could be a regression caused by an update, please downgrade to samba packages of version 2:3.6.3-2ubuntu2 and see if that fixes the problem. If it does, then please try to narrow down which update created the problem.

Otherwise, please try using "tdbtool check" to check all your tdb databases in /var/lib/samba, and also try reverting to an old backup from before you had the problem, to ensure that the problem isn't caused by a corruption in these files.

You could also try using the latest upstream version compiled from source, in case this bug has been fixed in a more recent upstream release.

If this all fails, then we're getting to the area where only a deep dive by a developer is going to be able to fix your issue. It may be easier for you to try recreating your domain from scratch to see if the problem goes away.
