Bug Description

Binary package hint: kopete

Kopete in Japanese (i.e. LANGUAGE and LANG environment variables set to ja_JP.UTF-8) has the online status menus all messed up.

For instance in MSN I have the following status options:

オンライン     -> online
すぐ戻ります -> be back soon
オンライン -> online
昼飯中 -> lunching
昼飯中 -> lunching
昼飯中 -> lunching
オンライン -> online

I is obvious that the list of status options is wrong as there are repeated options and there is no invisible option. In jabber and Yahoo the status menu also have repeated and missing options.

Setting the language environment to English and running Kopete gives me correct options but in English and I prefer a 100% Japanese system. .

I am using Kubuntu Feisty Fawn with all latest updates.

To reproduce this problem in an English system simply change the language environment variables prior to executing Kopete like (from the console):

export LANG=ja_JP.UTF-8
export LANGUAGE=ja_JP.UTF-8
kopete

Is this still an issue in KDE 4/Kubuntu Intrepid?
Might it be that the translations are just wrong?

In Kubuntu 8.04 with KDE4.1.2 the issue is different. Kopete displays all menus in Japanese correctly but the status options always appear in English no matter what I do.

Otherwise you might be missing the necessary package (please make sure kde-l10n-ja) is installed.

I have installed kde-l10n-ja and kde-i18n-ja packages. I can see in the kopete.po file from this page http://l10n.kde.org/stats/gui/stable-kde4/team/ja/kdenetwork/ that all status strings (i.e. Online, Away, Invisible, etc.) are translated. Or at least they seem to be as I can see these entries in the po file:

msgid "Online"
msgstr "オンライン"

msgid "Away"
msgstr "不在"

msgid "Invisible"
msgstr "潜伏中"

msgid "Offline"
msgstr "オフライン"

Still the context menu shows these options in english only. See screenshot attached.

I have KDE 4.1.2 and Kopete 0.60.2 installed from latest Kubuntu packages.

The current situation is far better than the original problem with duplicate entries so I really don't mind having these options displayed in English but I think this is not the intended behavior.

What version of Kubuntu are you using?

Ah, scratch that, I am getting confused from all the bug reports I process per day ;-)

Anyway, there are two "invisible" strings, both are used in jabber, and one is marked fuzzy. That means the string changed in Kopete and the translator didn't yet ensure the translation is still correct.

Eitherway, we wouldn't be able to do anything about that without breaking Kopete. You might want to get in touch with the Japanese KDE l10n team :)
