I have a similar problem.

the error message I get is:

davim@davim-laptop:~/Desktop$ totem --sync CHEFE3.wmv
The program 'totem' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)'.
  (Details: serial 67 error_code 11 request_code 141 minor_code 19)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
   that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
   To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
   option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
   backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

Thanks for your bugreport.

Is this problem reproducible for you? Does it help if you run (in a terminal):
$ sudo apt-get update
and then try to open the file?

Thanks,
 Michael

Changed in gnome-app-install:
status: Unconfirmed → Needs Info

Hello,

Actually, the problem appears to be not reproducible. My computer is
always up-to-date (it's the first thing I do every day before working)
and the problem happens only once. Whenever I try to reproduce the
same scenario, firefox now launches totem without any bug (and totem
is still not able to read the wmv file, but this is another
problem...) So the gnome applications are not launched as the first
time, and incidentally they don't crash :-)

Sorry to be unable to help you furthermore for this issue.

Regards,
Philippe
