Bug Description

I just installed ITC Garamond (Type 1), into my system. All the applications recognize the font properly, except for OpenOffice.org.

OpenOffice.org displays just "Garamond". If I select the font, no font preview is shown. If I start typing using the font, I get another substitution font, probably Vera Sans. When I explicitly enter "ITC Garamond" into the font dialog myself, OpenOffice.org does find the font.

This is highly ennoying, and somehow occurs with all my "ITC ..." fonts.

pmjdebruijn@carnifex:~/texlive/build$ fc-list | grep "ITC Garamond"
ITC Garamond:style=Book Italic
ITC Garamond:style=Bold Italic
ITC Garamond:style=Bold
ITC Garamond:style=Book
pmjdebruijn@carnifex:~/texlive/build$

I've inspected the font metadata, it seems nowhere it's called "Garamond"... "ITC Garamond" is always used.

This is a sample, I have been able to reproduce the issue, with this single font.

Please note that this is a bug that occurs with all 'ITC ...' fonts. It's not isolated to this one.

Maybe this needs to go upstream?

In Ubuntu hardy the Garamond fonts show up as (including the one you attached in ~/.fonts):

Garamond:style=Bold,Negreta,tučné,fed,Fett,Έντονα,Negrita,Lihavoitu,Gras,Félkövér,Grassetto,Vet,Halvfet,Pogrubiony,Negrito,Полужирный,Krepko,Fet,Kalın,Lodia
Garamond:style=Italic,Cursiva,kurzíva,kursiv,Πλάγια,Kursivoitu,Italique,Dőlt,Corsivo,Cursief,Kursywa,Itálico,Курсив,Po<U+009A>evno,İtalik,Etzana
Garamond:style=Regular,Normal,obyčejné,Standard,Κανονικά,Normaali,Normál,Normale,Standaard,Normalny,Обычный,Navadno,Arrunta
GarmdITC Bk BT:style=Bold
GarmdITC Bk BT:style=Bold Italic
GarmdITC Bk BT:style=Book
GarmdITC Bk BT:style=Book Italic
GarmdITC BkCn BT:style=Bold
GarmdITC BkCn BT:style=Bold Italic
GarmdITC BkCn BT:style=Book
GarmdITC BkCn BT:style=Book Italic

Which can be seen by openoffice.org 1:2.4.0~rc2-1ubuntu3 so I am marking as Fix Released. If after upgrading you continue to have problems with this issue then feel free to reopen this bug.

Fontconfig appears to be picking up the name of the font from garamdn.pfm which has this text inside the file "GarmdITC Bk BT", look at it in the vim editor or something else that can safely display binary files.

Thanks,

Chris Cheney

Reopening and reassigning to fontconfig after seeing the part of the report saying it is mischoosing fonts due to this issue.

I just install hardy, and rechecked it with OpenOffice 2.4.0-3ubuntu1, and the issue still remains.

Please note, that when I select the Garamond font, I get a blad sans-serif face, instead of ITC Garamond. When I actually (manually) type "ITC Garamond" into the font selection box in OOo, I _do_ get ITC Garamond.

Other application do not seem to suffer from this issue. I've tested both Scribus and AbiWord and then properly recognize ITC Garamond as such. This is a OpenOffice.org specific bug!

I just tested this as well with OpenOffice.org 3.0 beta. It remains.

I just retested this with:

And indeed, this bug seems to be finally fixed!
