kswapd0 high CPU usage and lagging system

Bug Description

Hi,
when the RAM is about to be full the kswapd0 process starts using very much CPU like 80-100%, and the system is unusable because of a severe lagging. What is interestin is that thunderbird seems to trigger this (e.g. when i shut down thunderbird everything comes ot normal, so let me know if you need to know the size of my thunderbird databases) more info on this comment https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/721896/comments/39

When this is happening, the free -m outout looks liek this:

WORKAROUND: Enabling 1Gb swap seems to solve this issue.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.10 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.

the prolem is gone in linux-image-3.10.0-031000rc3-generic_3.10.0-031000rc3.201305261935_amd64.deb ! Also the system has a faster feel (and some of the apps as thunderbird and android emulator seem to move faster)

Is it possible to get this kernel in raring via the usual update one day? (because now there were some DKMS erros which ignored for the time of this test) or is it possible to enable a PPA which will maintain this mainline kernel up to date?

forgot to mention that the test was done with swap off. Also right before the test I confirmed that the bug is still prezent with the stable raring kernel (that the system becomes unresponsive and almost hangs, u can barely move the mouse). After the new kernel was installed and reboot, the problem is gone.

dimovnike, thank you for testing the newest mainline kernel. Could you please test for this problem in Saucy (i.e. 0GB swap/swap off and kswapd0 has 80-100% CPU usage) via http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ and comment to the results?

I'm running stable raring right now on SSD, and having this problem daily. Can someone point me to a HOWTO/instructions to get the updated kernel until it's available mainline?

The problem is still affecting me. I have no swap partition but at some times computer starts lagging and disk start working as hell. top command tells me chromium and kswapd usage is very high.
