Bug Description

GNOME Shell 3.8.2-1ubuntu2~raring1 (from GNOME3 PPA) is not installable in Raring due to broken dependencies. It depends on libpango-1.0-0 (>= 1.14.0) and libpangocairo-1.0-0 (>= 1.14.0), however, libpangocairo-1.0-0 (or any similarly named 'pangocairo' package) seems to be unavailable at all. As is libpango-1.0-0, since the actual libpango package in Raring is named 'libpango1.0-0' (without the hyphen between 'o' and '1'!). It's probably a typo.

Here's the actual output of commands:

# apt-get install gnome-shell:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
 gnome-shell : Depends: libpango-1.0-0 (>= 1.14.0) but it is not installable
               Depends: libpangocairo-1.0-0 (>= 1.14.0) but it is not installable

# apt-get install libpango-1.0-0:
Package libpango-1.0-0 is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source

E: Package 'libpango-1.0-0' has no installation candidate

# apt-get install libpangocairo-1.0-0:
Package libpangocairo-1.0-0 is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source

E: Package 'libpangocairo-1.0-0' has no installation candidate

Hi,

Agreed with previous comments

It seems these dependencies are actually libs included in package libpango1.0-0
See reference from Ubuntu : http://packages.ubuntu.com/raring/amd64/libpango1.0-0/filelist

In the end, installing gnome 3.8 from ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3 is not possible at the moment
 # apt-get install gnome-shell ubuntu-gnome-desktop

Btw,
Sorry for asking but is there any way to apt-get any working previous version ?

@Jeremy Bicha: I see that gnome-shell is currently rebuilding in the GNOME3 PPA; however, the same dependency problem is also present for (at least) empathy, evolution-data-server and totem.

@jbicha: Don't rebuild them, I am fine with copying the current harfbuzz, pango1.0, pangox-compat and plymouth builds from staging.

@jason, ubuntu-gnome-desktop may have been removed, so I'd suggest instead:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade && sudo apt-get install ubuntu-gnome-desktop

Re-opening, today's upgrade shows a ton of failed dependencies, possibly caused by:

"""
The following packages have been kept back:

Agreed, the pango packages from the ricotz testing repo don't play well with dependencies in Raring. I've got the gnome3 and gnome3-staging repos enabled, and for the last few days Synaptic has wanted to uninstall what seems to be two thirds of my system...

@r-wiberg: I think ricotz/jbicha would tell you (correct me if I'm wrong) it's expected to meet deps breakage with Staging. But here it's not about Staging, the problem appears even if you just use the Stable PPA.
