Bug Description

Binary package hint: firefox

Firefox is more usable with the browser.urlbar.clickSelectsAll preference in about:config set to true. Most of the time, when I click on the URL bar, I intend to type a new URL, rather than edit the existing one.

In every Windows and Mac browser, clicking the address bar selects the URL. Presumably, the reason that Linux browsers usually don't is due to X's odd habit of copying selected text to the clipboard, replacing whatever was there previously. Since Ubuntu takes a more enlightened approach to clipboard management, why not restore a useful feature and make it the default?

I agree that this is a very user-friendly enhancement. Plus it would go a long way in improving the chances of fixing Bug #1.

Changing the status to confirmed; it was marked incomplete, but that was inappropriate as there was no request for additional info or anything like that.

Nowadays, I'm a bit more ambivalent about this than I was when I first filed this bug. I still think that it's probably a good idea, but auto-select can get annoying if you're trying to edit the URL, and you can click the favicon to select the whole thing, or hit ^L.

Actually, with Firefox 3 (which is in Hardy Heron 8.04), clicking the favicon brings up some summary information about the page.

I like this idea because most of the people who switch to Ubuntu will be accustom to Windows and Mac versions of Firefox, which have the single-click-highlight feature. When they click on the Ubuntu version of Firefox url, they will be thrown by the change. I support having a little consistency with crossover programs. Firefox should be Firefox everywhere.

Please leave this bug incomplete as I am away at this time and the Mozilla team needs to confirm this or decline it, Once that happens we will change it to comply with what we decided.

Hi,
Altough i switched this feature on with Gutsy (since it was the only way to clear the urlbar, as Ctrl-U "emas"-keybinding isn't useable anymore on Gnome), the behaviour changed in Firefox 3, which now _overwrite_ the buffer. Thus it would be a very severe regression if it's default activated.
Sadly, the only way left that i can think of to simply delete the urlbar on recent Firefox is to double-click on the favicon..

This is new behaviour in firefox 3. changing UI behaviour in major
release upgrades is a common practice and not a regression.
