Bug Description

ptomes@ptomes-laptop:~$ gnome-compiz-preferences

***MEMORY-WARNING***: gtk-window-decorator[7432]: GSlice: g_thread_init() must be called before all other GLib functions; memory corruption due to late invocation of g_thread_init() has been detected; this program is likely to crash, leak or unexpectedly abort soon...
Chyba GConf: Chybný typ: Očekával jsem 'float', ale obdržel jsem 'int' pro klíč /apps/compiz/plugins/decoration/allscreens/options/shadow_radius

ptomes@ptomes-laptop:~$

(On current-updated Gutsy AMD64. No problem on Edgy AMD64 on this machine.)

I'm sorry, only the memory warning was a duplicate of bug #116870
However, the non-english part of this bug description can be fixed in gconf-editor:

1) Go to apps/compiz/plugins/decoration/allscreens/options/
2) Right click shadow_radius and choose "Unset Key"

Now, you'll only get the memory warning, but gnome-compiz-preferences still will not be shown. Strangely, if you load two simultaneous instances of gnome-compiz-preferences, both will be shown.

Changed in gnome-compiz-manager:
status: Unconfirmed → Confirmed

After step 2), you have to right click shadow_radius again, choose "Edit Key..." and click "OK". Otherwise the change won't be saved.

Not sure if I should set "0" value of the key. The key could not have
been deleted. After this steps I have got no started application :(

ptomes@ptomes-laptop:~$ gnome-compiz-preferences
Segmentation fault (core dumped)

When you choose "Unset Key", it's type is changed from "int" to "float" (that solves the Gconf Error), and it's value is changed from 9 to 8.0, but these changes are not saved if you don't "Edit Key..." (here you can change from 8.0 to 9.0 again) and click OK. So you're right, you can't delete the key, but we don't want to delete the key, only change it's type from "int" to "float".

Aren't you getting the memory-warning anymore?

In my case, i get the memory warning, and gnome-compiz-preferences doesn't show up. However, if, while one instance of gnome-compiz-preferences is loaded, and in another terminal I load a second instance of gnome-compiz-preferences, then the first one shows up. Then, if I click "Enable GL Desktop", I can see both windows, and I get the following output from both loaded instances:
** (gnome-compiz-preferences:9270): WARNING **: plugin crashhandler isn't installed

(gnome-compiz-preferences:9270): libgnomevfs-CRITICAL **: gnome_vfs_get_uri_from_local_path: assertion `g_path_is_absolute (local_full_path)' failed

** (gnome-compiz-preferences:9270): WARNING **: plugin showdesktop isn't installed

** (gnome-compiz-preferences:9270): WARNING **: plugin inputzoom isn't installed

** (gnome-compiz-preferences:9270): WARNING **: plugin animation isn't installed
Unfortunately, compiz effects are not working, and my settings are not saved.

I can confirm the exact effect Juan Pablo Salazar Bertín just described.

Open one, nothing.
Open two, one opens.
Tick ‘Enable’, first shows up.
Identical output in console.

Confirmed on 7.10. Settings are not saved. Desktop effects vs. Compiz Settings - the Compiz settings are lost. Desktop effects also does not open.

Is _everybody_ seeing this with gutsy?
Or is it some configuration/combination that only _some_ people have?

I see the same thing as Juan Pablo Salazar Bertín and George Pollard. I decided to look a little further into it:

1) I start gnome-compiz-preferences from a terminal, and nothing happens.
2) I start it again from another terminal, and the dialog pops up. At the exact same time, in the first terminal, I get the following error messages:

(gnome-compiz-preferences:10673): libgnomevfs-CRITICAL **: gnome_vfs_get_uri_from_local_path: assertion `g_path_is_absolute (local_full_path)' failed

** (gnome-compiz-preferences:10673): WARNING **: plugin inputzoom isn't installed

3) I have verified (by pressing Ctrl-C in each of the two terminals in succession) that it is in fact the first instance that pops up, not the second. In other words, starting the second instance somehow unwedges the first one.

I forgot to add: Gutsy, Lenovo T60, ATI X1400, fglrx, and, obviously, Xgl and compiz.
