Blender seems to cause a crash in this specific graphics driver / on that hardware, because the problem is not existing on my machine.

Could you try other versions of blender, maybe the 2.44 version found on the blender website?

OK, I downloaded the recent version from Blender website but the problem persists.
Could this be related to python ?

In the current version of hardy, proprietary ati driver from ubuntu repos, if I try to add anything, blender crashes.

This is most likely an issue with the driver. To verify this, get the static build from http://download.blender.org/release for the release version you want to check. If this works, then you have a buggy driver. This should always be checked with crashes that have mention of a driver in their backtraces.

Thank you for your report.

Closing this bug as it is about an out of date blender on a version of ubuntu that is not supported anymore. Please open a new report if this problem occurs on a supported version of ubuntu with the last stable blender.

Download the newest stable blender at blender.org.
