An error ocured when I try to run update manager

Bug Description
I tried to install the last updates, released 8 June. When I do I get this error:-
E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.
I have tried to install all four updates together and individually and still get the same error.

please run "sudo dpkg --configure -a" from a terminal as it is requesting.
the "Please report" section of this bug is reported elsewhere, but i dont have the number handy.
