Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

If I launch an icon by double-clicking on it and then move the mouse before the app launches then the panel hosting the icon I clicked will move to the side where the mouse moved. To get the panel back to its original position I need to go into the panel's properties and change the orientation back to top.

How to repeat:
In the default Gnome desktop, double-click on the Firefox icon and then quickly move the mouse to the right side before Firefox launches. For me, I can get this to recur at least 20% of the time, or even more frequent if there is a load on the computer such as launching some other app (e.g., OpenOffice) and then double-clicking on the Firefox icon, followed by moving the mouse away.

I got this same behavior on both my Feisty Desktop i386 installation as well as on a Feisty Desktop AMD64 LiveCD.

Hi Sebastien,

I went back and did a more thorough search and still couldn't find the same issue I described. I see ones related to icons within a panel jumping around, but my search found none where the panel's orientation itself changes.

I would like to link this rejected bug to the one that this is a duplicate of.

I don't want to spend 10 minutes looking through bug only to find the duplicate number, there is http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=309721 upstream about it for example and I'm pretty sure we got some bug on launchpad, which might have been closed as an user error triggering a dnd though

Thanks for the link to the upstream bug report. Although the enhancement request from that bug (Gnome #309721) would help with the symptoms of what I am reporting, my issue stems from a different problem.

The problem isn't that I am accidentally dragging the panel, but that somehow the panel thinks I am trying to drag, even though my mouse never started to do a drag. As I described above, simply double-clicking on an icon on the panel and then moving the mouse causes the panel to move to whichever side the mouse traveled. Not a single click, but the unexpected (albeit unnecessary) double-click.

Look to upstream and closed bug, there is similar issues already described, they are not easy to trigger though and it's not clear if that's a panel bug or due to the device or xorg
