Bug Description

Binary package hint: nautilus

Nautilus simply freezes when I choose "Properties" from the context menu on any file. In the nautilus-debug-log.txt that appears after I have killed the process, there are a lot of lines like this one:
0x81868c0 2007/06/14 22:07:53.0883 (USER): debug log dumped due to signal 11
When Nautilus restarts, the problem disappears.

This isn't a duplicate of the #120447, because my Nautilus freezes even with simple text files or folders!

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been
any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue
for you? Thanks in advance.

Ok, so if I understand this correctly, when you right-click on a file and choose "properties", Naautilus hangs/freezes and eventually crashes? An when you restart it, it works again (can you open preferences?).

What version of ubuntu, gnome, nautilus, etc do you use? Happens to all files? Do you have them in your home, and on the root filesystem? Do you know if the problem does still exist on the latest Gutsy-alpha?

Can you please run this, make it crash and attach the output, please:

G_DEBUG=fatal_criticals nautilus

Also, follow the steps in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Backtrace and attach the resulting file, please.

Thank you.

Yes, exactly.
I use Ubuntu Feisty 7.04, GNOME 2.18.1, Nautilus 2.18.1-0ubuntu1.
It happens to all files, in the home and on the root, but not always. I don't know if the problem still exist on Gutsy.
Now I can't attach the backtrace because it didn't crash. But this morning I had the same problem. It happens without an apparent cause, even without applications running.

OK. G_DEBUG=fatal_critics doesn't return anything, but in my home now i have the file attached.

It doesn't crash, eh? How do you close it? Does Metacity (the button with the X in the corner of the window) still work?

Yesterday didn't crash, but this morning did. The command you gave me (G_DEBUG=fatal_critics) didn't return anythin but in my home apperead the file i attached in the previous comment. Metacity still works but when i press the x button appears a window that asks me to "force quit". When Nautilus restarts the problem disappears. Now i'm restarting the pc so i can do also the steps in http://wiki.ubuntu.com/Backtrace.

Ok, backtrace done. This is. (in the file there is "the program exited normally", but it's false! i clicked on properties, nautilus freezed, and when I tried to close it (via the x button), apparead the window that asked me to force quit the app.

-insert swearword here-. Okay, that backtrace won't help. Can you please do the steps in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Valgrind ? Thanks.

And a video would be great, too! There is such thing as too much information.

Is there any difference if you turn off your desktop-effects? By the way, which program are you using for the effects? Beryl? Compiz? What version of that program?

I'm using Compiz Fusion 0.5.1, but the problem persists even without desktop compositing.

It happens to me too.

But only if i launch Nautilus like simple user. If i launch Nautilus with "sudo nautilus", right click --> properties works very well. Maybe is it a permissions problem?

There's no good stacktrace of the issue and this should be fixed on Hardy, can you test on Hardy to reproduce the same problem and provide us of a good trace? thanks.

In my case, such problem only happens on Hardy (Linux ubuntu 2.6.24-16-generic #1 SMP Thu Apr 10 13:23:42 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux), especially when I was trying to modify the default player for media files. But on Gutsy everything just works fine.

So...still no solutions ?
