Bug Description

My DVDRW and CDRW drives are not working properly. I think the quickest way to describe the problem is a link to my posts in UbuntuForums (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=470641).

The longer version is this:

Ever since my upgrade to Feisty, the side panel in Nautilus has had to icons that should have linked to either of my removable media drives. Instead they would inform me that the drive in question did not exist. I attempted by various means in /etc/fstab to correct the problem, but instead it just kept getting worse. Even though I copied my original fstab and eventually replaced it, my system never recovered.

Currently, DVDs are functionally invisible in the DVDRW tray. They will play in the CDRW, however. CDs are functionally invisible in either tray to everything except Sound Juicer. I mean EVERYTHING... no k3b, no Nautilus, no XMMS or Audacious. Nothing.

Here's my current fstab (with the pertinent lines from it's predecessor commented out):
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# <file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
# /dev/hda1
UUID=5cbae883-1ea5-4909-a0f7-25dd778ffc45 / ext3 defaults,errors=remount-ro 0 1
# /dev/hda5
UUID=1cfc19bb-b5dc-4199-8498-7bb897ec58f6 none swap sw 0 0
/dev/sdb1 /media/storage ext3 defaults 0 0
#/dev/hdc /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto 0 0
/dev/scd0 /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto 0 0
#/dev/hdd /media/cdrom1 udf,iso9660 user,noauto 0 0
/dev/scd1 /media/cdrom1 udf,iso9660 user,noauto 0 0
/dev/fd0 /media/floppy0 auto rw,user,noauto 0 0

Here's the pertinent hardware:
 *-cdrom:0
                description: DVD reader
                product: RW/DVD GCC-4520B
                vendor: HL-DT-ST
                physical id: 2

                configuration: ansiversion=5
              *-disc
                   physical id: 0
                   logical name: /dev/cdrom

Here's the output from dmesg | grep CD:
[ 23.426388] scsi 1:0:0:0: CD-ROM HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4520B 1.00 PQ: 0 ANSI: 5

(There is an audio CD present when I entered the above)

I'm on Feisty, linux-image 2.6.20-16-generic. Thank you in advance for any help.

Similar issues on home comp. Nothing seems to be able to access audio CDs (except, previously, Sound Juicer), since I tried changing to Audacious in System >> Preferences >> Removable Drives and Media with the line "audacious -p /media/cdrom" in the appropriate spot. No luck. "No playable CD" is the standard type of error I get.

Once again, my fstab doesn't quite seem to agree with my hardware:
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# <file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
# /dev/hda2 -- converted during upgrade to edgy
UUID=2ec78ab2-2fe6-4211-abbb-a22984e9648b / ext3 defaults,errors=remount-ro 0 1
# /dev/hda5 -- converted during upgrade to edgy
UUID=e34f029b-7b4a-4def-badb-fa40de54314a none swap sw 0 0
UUID=bfe37834-a8da-4f43-81a7-c67928f282e0 /media/storage ext3 defaults 0 0
/dev/hdc /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto 0 0

... whereas sudo lshw gives the following for my CDROM:
 *-cdrom
                description: DVD reader
                product: COMBO LTC-48161H
                vendor: LITE-ON
                physical id: 1
                bus info: scsi@1:0.0.0
                logical name: /dev/cdrom
                logical name: /dev/dvd
                logical name: /dev/scd0
                logical name: /dev/sr0
                version: KH0G
                capabilities: removable audio cd-r cd-rw dvd
                configuration: ansiversion=5
              *-disc
                   physical id: 0
                   logical name: /dev/cdrom

Nowhere does it say /dev/hdc. However, I'm reluctant to alter it here at home, since it actually made matters worse at work. Here's some more info that might be of use:

Any updates on this bug? It's almost a year old. Were you be able to find what's wrong? Maybe a nice reinstall or Gutsy or Hardy fixed the problem?
