Bug Description

Binary package hint: firefox

Firefox does not store the icon of a bookmark (favicon) if the URL of the bookmark and the page differ on an ending backslash.

For example, if I have bookmarked http://www.wikipedia.org I will never get the Wikipedia icon in the bookmark.

However, if I have bookmarked http://www.wikipedia.org/ (note the ending slash), Firefox stores the icon in the bookmark.

However, the icon does become visible once the bookmark has been clicked (As of 2.x)

Searched the database for the similar ones. It is a kind of different problem
from the previous ones. While others says wrong favicons or icon lost, this one
refers to blank-sheet icon first, then refresh(bring up the page with another
browser) to get the desired one.

repro:
Open a link from a page and bookmark it (doesn't matter how).
Open the bookmarks menu (or Places) and notice there's just the default icon
The icon is only added if you open the bookmarked page from the bookmark itself.

Peter: still WFM, no matter how I add the bookmark the icon is always saved. No default blank icon.

This is still present in Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X; en-US; rv:1.8.1.1) Gecko/20061204 Firefox/2.0.0.1. It's not terribly inconvenient, but it seems like it should be fixable given that the favicon is already loaded in the address bar and on the title of the tab. Weird that it works for Kurt though and not other people using 3.0 alphas.

It is not the case here, this bug is perfectly reproducible and only fixed for now on trunk builds when/where Places is enabled.

please don't post bugs upstream until the bug has the mt-postupstream tag ... bugzilla is pretty hard to search and often you miss already existing bugs. Further, please add mt-confirm tag after setting upstream url next time (e.g. not just removing tags), so we can confirm that its on track before moving it to "In Progress".

i am tempted to say that this bug is due to Bug 113430 – Various favicon caching problems

well ... they just duped it to some related bug imo ... which is what happens when you just open a bug for which upstream already has plenty of variants filed ... please remember next time: upstream has already high load and we don't want to stress that any further.

so don't post a bug upstream unless our bug is tagged mt-postupstream

I think it has been solved in Firefox 3.0. Note it's still in Release
Candidate status.

I'm using Firefox 10.0 Beta 2 and the bug still exists since a few major versions.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Add this site to your bookmarks (if already delete the entry first).
2. Open your bookmark list and look at the favicon of the new entry.

The favicon is the default dashed square but the symbol should be the green bug of this site. A workaround is to click on the bookmark entry and the favicon will be downloaded and stored automatically. But the favicon should already be stored if the bookmark is created.

You should have filed a separate bug, posting in a closed bug is not that much useful. Btw, did you already try Safe mode? http://support.mozilla.org/kb/safe+mode

I thought I can change the status and wanted to prevent that my new ticket gets the duplicate status. I have opened a new ticket now: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=715336
